Sharing the Printer on Home Network

Thanks Superdog!

I always appreciate people who is willing to offer their helping hands.   I don't mind you type so much blah balh, I could simply skip some topics if I am not interested and ...

do have specifc question.  I would like to setup our printer to be shared by the laptop and computer.  So I can send the doc to printer directly from laptop.  Could you please touch this topic a bit? Thanks in advance...

Sorry, I didn't mean to ignore the subject, just being swamped by lots of stuff at the moment.

I'll assume the most common home network environment:

1.       computers are running XP home editions in a "workgroup" (peer to peer).
2.       Your printer is already connected to one desktop computer.
3.       and your computers can actually "see" each other. e.g. On your laptop, if you use Window Explorer to drill down "my network places", you can see your desktop computer.

Here are the steps:

1. On your desktop PC (your printer connected to this computer), go to "Start/Settings/Printer and Faxes" or "Start/Control Panel/Printer and Faxes", the exact path may be slightly different depends on your computer configuration.

2. You should see your printer, right click on the printer, select sharing, then give it a name.

3. On your laptop, select "Start/Settings/Printer and Faxes", then click "Add Printer".

4. Select "A network printer ...", follow the screen, browse for your printer, if no firewall or other network problems, your printer should show up, then just select the printer, it will prompt for the printer model, if you find yours on the list (or a close cousin), just choose the model, otherwise you can choose your own printer driver that comes with your printer purchase (or download the latest driver). After it finishes install, it asks you to print a test page, assuming everything goes correctly, you can go to your printer to pick up your first remotely printed test page J

A couple of notes:

1. Please note that what I described is the sunshine scenario with a basic home windows network and the printer is a basic USB printer.  In this typical case, if you need to print from your laptop, your desktop (basically becomes a printer server) needs to be running at the time.

2. If you have a network printer, then you can print as long as your printer is running. But the setup is a bit more involved. You’ll need to consult the network printer manual (I have a brother MFC-8444D. I followed this user manual http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/Public/files/dlf/doc000203/ZL2eFBDCP_UsaEngNet_B.pdf)

I found a pretty good link that has more details on setting up your home network printer. http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1596&page=1

Good luck and have fun!

BTW:  Superdog, just notice recently that your UID==1. 开坛元勋之一,失敬!

I got chance to try last weekend.  It works!

It was pretty straight forward.  The only little hiccup was that my laptop could not find the shared printer by browsing it.  I have to key in the URL by myself, i.e. \\192.168.0.2\<shared printer name>.

Thanks again!
